My Story

So how did this all begin?

If you are reading this, chances are that you are (or will soon be) a new mama, caring for a sweet baby whom you have waited so long to meet.  Becoming a mom is a very transformative, defining experience and you may choose to breastfeed your baby after learning about all the benefits of breast milk.  If so, you may soon find yourself wondering why no one told you how difficult it can be.  Like I always tell my patients, "Breastfeeding is natural, but it doesn't always come naturally."

Rewind to April 2010.  I was a new mama, ecstatic to meet my beautiful new baby.  I had decided, during the pregnancy, that I wanted to breastfeed in order to develop that close bond and provide immunity-boosting breastmilk to her in order to give her the healthiest start in life.  But then.......I found out from a well-meaning postpartum nurse that I had "bad equipment for breastfeeding" and that was why my poor baby couldn't latch on.  I kept hearing about how much weight she was losing, how she had a "fussy" personality, and how I was probably not going to be able to breastfeed.  After MANY tears, sleepless nights, adventures with nipple shields, and pumping about a thousand times, I found out my daughter also had a food allergy or intolerance that was the reason for her loose stools, head-to-toe red, patchy rash, and "colicky" behavior (read:  incessant, inconsolable crying.)  One afternoon as I cried, my very kind pediatrician calmly wrote down a phone number on a sticky note, handed it to me, and told me to give this person a call because he thought she could help me.  About 45 minutes later, I met the Lactation Consultant who would forever change the course of my life........ and I knew I had found my calling.

I see you.

I understand.

I am here to help.

We can do this!!!
